Art Basel Miami Online: OVR: Miami Beach

2 - 6 December 2020

We are delighted to exhibit a solo presentation of works by Internet Art pioneer, Suzanne Treister, at Art Basel Miami Online Viewing Room 2020.

Treister has worked in the digital/new media/web-based field since the 1980’s and early 1990’s and we’re pleased to present a selection of early works from this period, including 3 Videogame paintings, 5 Floppy Disk paintings and a selection of editioned Fictional Videogame Stills.

Treister’s work looks at, amongst other things, emerging technologies, developing fictional worlds, and international collaborative organisations. Often spanning several years, her projects comprise fantastic reinterpretations of given taxonomies and histories. An ongoing focus of her work is the relationship between new technologies, society, alternative belief systems and the potential futures of humanity.

“From the mid to late nineteen eighties I spent several nights a week hanging out in amusement arcades in London's Soho with my boyfriend who was hooked on videogames. Over time, waiting around for him to finish so we could go and eat or see a film, I started to think about the games, their structures, their objectives, their themes, their addictiveness. I started to consider their cultural subtexts, antecedents, the effect they may have on society and how they might develop and connect to other mechanisms, developments and fantasies or projections of the future.”
