From 15 September until 28 October 2006 Annely Juda Fine Art will be showing an exhibition of 25 new paintings by David Hockney. Hockney painted these works over the last year from July 2005. The paintings span the four seasons through the scorched landscape of summer, the autumn mists, frozen winter scenes and the blossoming of spring. They were painted in East Yorkshire, outside in the countryside he knows and loves so well. The exhibition includes two impressive six-part canvases almost 2 x 4 metres in size.
By painting the works outside Hockney has captured the essence of nature in all its vivid tones and characteristic forms. The paintings change our way of seeing the countryside, drawing attention to its colours, shapes and textures. The brushstrokes seem exact and considered and yet are typically economic and spontaneous. The immediacy and impact of the works highlight the power of David Hockney’s painting. The shadows and horizons are pronounced and the field of vision wider and deeper than any camera could achieve.
The exhibition will be over two floors at Annely Juda Fine Art and will be accompanied by a fully illustrated hard-back catalogue including an introduction by David Hockney. All works are illustrated.
David Hockney was born in Bradford in 1937 and studied at the Royal College of Art between 1959 and 1962. His first solo exhibition was in 1963. His last exhibition of paintings held in London was Flowers, Faces and Spaces at Annely Juda Fine Art in 1997.
