Anthony Hill British, 1930-2020
Maquette for Relief Construction, 1966-67
painted aluminium on polystyrene mounted on board
38 x 38 cm
This work is the original model for Relief Construction (Partition H1), 1966–7, which was realised at double scale. The thematic content is the six partitions of the number 4, expressed using 120° aluminium elements oriented in accordance with the partitioning, and with their leading edges painted black. The 24 elements are evenly spaced on a grid, although their configuration gives rise to a visual suggestion of two groups of 12. The base is cream coloured polystyrene sheet, floating above the wall on two horizontally mounted battens that remain invisible unless viewed from flush to the wall.
