Covering 20,000 years of temporal slippage, Christopher Mayer's practice operates within the intricacies of capitalism, nationhood, and environmental collapse; of rising tides both environmental and societal. Employing a collaging technique in the mode of Walter Benjamin's ‘Arcades Project', multiple mutually-informing research paths intersect around ideas of societal upheaval and geological time. From the now- submerged Mesolithic region of Doggerland to the Levellers' potential thwarting of capitalism's rise in the seventeenth century, he looks to moments in history when things break apart; when one potential is lost and something else, something more or less likely, takes its place.
