An exhibition of Bronze and Book Sculptures by Anthony Caro, one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. The exhibition consists of 22 small-scale sculptures, including the last pieces on which Caro ever worked, shortly before his death in 2013.
Anthony Caro first exhibited a collection of book sculptures at Annely Juda Fine Art in 1998. Having largely avoided the use of clay (Caro favoured metal in his foray into abstraction from the early 1960's), an introduction to the German ceramist, Hans Spinner, in the early 1990s sparked an interest in the material and the original stoneware books were begun in 1995. In 2011 Caro was re-introduced to the material and brought back to some of his clay 'books' which he had begun to work on years earlier. Caro began experimenting with different combinations of steel appendages, incorporating largely workshop tools into the folds and creases of clay.
