This collage is a cover design for the Book ‘Zhongguo' (‘China') by Sergei Tretyakov published in 1927. The chosen cover design for the book was made by Alexander Rodchenko and this was a second variation not chosen by the editor of the book. Elena Semenova (1898-1986), born in Moscow, was an architect and graphic designer. In 1919-1920 she studied sculpture at the Petrograd State Free Art Workshops, she then studied at VKhUTEMAS from 1920 and from 1922-24 at the Faculty for Architecture. In the early 1920s she joined INHUK (Institute of Artistic Culture) and was associated with Alexander Rodchenko and Varvara Stepanova. Between 1920 and 1930 she created posters in the style of constructivism for various adverts and posters. In 1928 she participated in the design of the Soviet section at the international exhibition "Press" in Cologne and in the late 1930s and early 1940s she worked as an artist at the exhibitions of the All-Union pavilions for the agricultural exhibition in Moscow.
